I have been painting since I was a child. At age twelve I took my first classes in oil painting and have been a devotee ever since. I never considered another path in life other than being an artist. My work comes from nature and it is in nature that I find peace and beauty that is so remarkable that I want to celebrate it in painting.
Growing up on the East coast, close to Long Island Sound, I spent my summers swimming and in the winter I walked the beach for solitude and contemplation. I am drawn to the quiet and “otherworldliness” of water, the sense of things hidden in the depths. I am visually fascinated by the different layers one sees when looking at the water, the reflections of the sky, the movement on the surface and the abstraction of what is below the surface.
The Flora and Fauna Series is another exploration of the natural world. Some of the pieces have been executed by making stencils and laying out layers of flat design in acrylic paint. I then go back and paint in areas with oil paint in a more realistic fashion. These pieces remind me of fabric and have given me a totally different approach to constructing a painting. I also have done a number of pieces from cut wood that allow me to escape the confines of a rectangular canvas.
Santa Fe New Mexico is my home and has been for several decades. My husband and I raised our two daughters here and now we live with our dogs. We are surrounded by mountains and spend a lot of our time hiking and enjoying the serenity of this part of the world. I have the blessing of a quiet studio and lots of nature around me for inspiration.
